Services for Students with Disabilities

Student Responsibilities

Students with disabilities who succeed at NAIT are those who are persistent and find ways to maximize their strengths. At NAIT, experienced Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) professionals coordinate the provision of individualized accommodation to students who have disabilities. Our goal is to provide access to supports, information, and resources that enable you succeed to the maximum of your potential.

To increase your opportunity for success at NAIT:

  • Collaborate
We work with you to develop and implement a support plan to meet your individual learning and participation needs.

  • Plan ahead
Start the process of accessing SSD support early!

    • If you are in an apprenticeship program, contact us early before your next apprenticeship training session starts (4-6 months ahead of time is recommended).
    • If you are a full-time or part-time student in any other NAIT program, contact us 4-6 months before the first day of class each year of your studies.
    • Before every year you study at NAIT, meet with an SSD Advisor to discuss the nature of your disability and the supports available to you for the coming year.

      TIP!
Right after final exams, contact SSD
to set up your services for the
      next school year.

    • You can apply for SSD supports any time during your studies. For maximum benefit, do it sooner rather than later every year you are at NAIT.

  • Bring documentation
Bring to your SSD appointment any available documentation that supports your application for SSD services and accommodations. Identify your accommodation needs to the SSD Advisor.

  • Walk the walk
Follow the service plan developed collaboratively by you and the SSD Advisor. Take full advantage of the services laid out in the plan (e.g., tutoring, sessions with an academic strategist, exam accommodations, assistive technology, etc.)

  • Talk the talk
Discuss any change in circumstances or services with an SSD Advisor promptly.

  • Be prepared
Bring appropriate materials (e.g., books, course readings) to every scheduled appointment with a disability service provider (e.g., tutor, academic strategist, exam) so you can get the most out of every session and use the full time to best advantage.

  • Be courteous
If you need to change or cancel a session with an SSD Advisor or disability service provider, please provide at least 24 hours notice. Otherwise, your services may be suspended.
