  • Chair appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council
  • The following persons appointed by the Minister:
    • 2 students nominated by the council of the students association
    • 2 academic staff members nominated by the academic staff association
    • 1 member of the non-academic staff who is not engaged in the administration of the technical institute nominated by the non-academic staff association
  • Not more than 11 persons appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, in addition to the chair
  • The president of the technical institute

General Powers and Duties

The Board shall

  • Manage and operate the public post-secondary institution in accordance with its mandate
  • Develop, manage and operate, alone or in co-operation with any person or organization, programs, services and facilities for the educational or cultural advancement of the people of Alberta
  • Establish admission requirements for the students of the public post-secondary institution other than students in the apprenticeship programs under the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act
  • Make and publish rules
    • respecting the enrolment of students to take courses, programs of study or training provided by the board
    • governing the taking of courses, programs of study or training provided by the board

Frequency of Meetings

Meetings are normally held quarterly.

Accountability of Board

Business Plan:
Each year, a board must prepare and approve a business plan that includes:

  • the budget
  • any other information required by the Minister

The business plan must be submitted to the Minister on or before the date specified by the Minister.

Annual Report

Each year a board must prepare and submit to the Minister a report that includes:

  • the audited financial statements for the preceding fiscal year
  • any other information the Minister requests

The annual report must be submitted to the Minister on or before the date specified by the Minister.
