Report your flu-related absence

What's new on this page: Updated information about doctor's note requirements

NAIT’s response to pandemic influenza is based on the total number of absences due to flu-like illness, which means we need to know on a daily basis how many staff and students are off sick with flu-like illness – whether you are diagnosed with H1N1 or you self-diagnose with the flu.

If you have flu-like symptoms, stay home from work for seven days after symptoms begin or you feel well enough to resume normal activities, whichever is shorter.

Doctor's notes

HR will not require a doctor's note from employees who are off sick with the flu longer than three days, as is normally required. A doctor's note may be required after an employee has been away for five work days.

In the event of flu-like symptoms, doctor’s notes are not required from students for missed classes for a period of up to five school days. In the event of missed compulsory evaluations (e.g. test, exams) due to flu-like symptoms, please consult with your program as a note from your doctor may still be required.

Online reporting system

We are asking staff to report their flu-related absences to their supervisor, and students to report their flu-related absences to their program assistant.

To track the numbers of staff and students who are off sick with flu-like illness, ISD has created an online reporting system. The link to the reporting system can also be found at www.nait.ca/h1n1.

Every program and department is responsible for reporting flu-related absences in their program and department daily before 5 p.m., starting Friday, Oct. 2. If you have zero absences, enter 0. The system will only allow each area to report once a day.

Each department and program is asked to designate a person responsible for inputting flu-related absences into the online reporting system, as well as a backup person.

Managers, leaders and supervisors are asked to ensure your employees are aware of the illness reporting process for your area.

Instructors are asked to ensure students know the illness reporting process and contact information for the program assistant.

If you have any questions about reporting flu-related absences, please contact Lawrence LeMesurier.

With your help we may be able to make a difference in controlling how the virus spreads at NAIT.
