Programs & Services

Research Coordination
novaNAIT facilitates applied research projects in collaboration with industry and NAIT schools by:

  • liaising with industry
  • determining project eligibility
  • creating grant funding proposals

Applied Research Chair Program
Applied Research Chairs carry out industry-specific applied research projects within the institute. Chairs are selected based on an alignment of interests and strengths between the industry sponsor and NAIT.

The Chair has access to NAIT resources (coordinated through novaNAIT), including:

  • administrative support
  • financial services
  • research assistants
  • NAIT students through the Capstone Program

The Chair maintains strong ties with the applicable industry in Alberta. The success of the program is measured by the Chair's achievements in providing three products to the applicable industry:

  • state-of-the-art research innovation that broadens the possibilities for enhanced productivity and cost reduction
  • technology transfer that immediately benefits the sponsor's industry and collaborating companies
  • human and technological resources that benefit the industry as a whole

Applied Research Institute (ARI)
The ARI will provide a focal point for interdisciplinary applied research in business, management, and the social sciences. It will connect research to practical challenges and build a faculty culture of applied research.

The ARI will also provide research evidence for future undergraduate program expansion.

novaNAIT Boreal Research Institute
The Boreal Research Institute promotes research collaboration, public awareness, technology transfer, and educational priorities in the boreal region of northwestern Alberta.

Boreal Reclamation Program
The mission of the Boreal Reclamation Program is to provide cost-effective reclamation methods, products, and education to enable industry to meet the new reclamation standards on forest lands. The program:

  • conducts applied research on the reclamation of well sites and other industrially disturbed sites, and
  • provides demonstration sites, procedures, and education technologies.

In the future, reclamation research will expand to include the Fort McMurray oil sands. The Boreal Reclamation Program is driven by a consortium of interested organizations.

Fuel Cell Project
NAIT created Canada's first high voltage, fully operational commercial fuel cell in 2003. It provides approximately 5-8% of NAIT's power needs, and is twice as efficient as a standard power plant. The electricity produced is used in NAIT's power system, and the heat produced is used to heat the swimming pool and showers in the Activities Centre.

The mission of NAIT's Fuel Cell development program is to develop fuel generation prototypes for fuel cells and to support the research, development, and commercialization of fuel cells.
