After the NAIT Ooks managed only one of a possible four points in back-to-back women's hockey clashes with the MacEwan Griffins, head coach Deanna Iwanicka stated a simple truth: "Our lack of competitive desire is getting us in trouble."
The weekend results -- a scoreless draw and a 4-2 Griffins victory -- left the teams tied in ACAC standings.
Jill Diachuk was outstanding in the 0-0 deadlock, blocking 37 shots as her managed only 27 on the MacEwan net.
On the following night, MacEwan had a 37-26 edge in shots. Emma Sommerfeld and Taryn McCormick scored for NAIT. Penalty-killing was a serious problem in the loss.
"There are some simple things we need to do," said Iwanicka. "Communication is one and taking accountability for our execution is another.
"Our special teams are under-achieving, too."
Her frustration was magnified because the Ooks played well in the opening period but failed to score. "It seems this team needs a little extra pressure in order to bring their game," Iwanicka concluded.
NAIT faces the fist-place Mount Royal Cougars this weekend and then looks forward to a bye in the schedule.
