History of the 109th Street Challenge
Located just blocks away from each other, NAIT and MacEwan are naturally fierce rivals in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association. In 2005, NAIT and MacEwan agreed to be part of the 109th Street Challenge, a program designed to build interest in men's and women's hockey, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. During two matches of each sport (one home and away game for each school), points are awarded based on the game result and fan attendance.
Each victory means 250 points to the winning college. Home-game attendance (two points per fan) also factor into the mix. At the end of each school year, the 109th Street Challenge Cup is awarded to the school that has accumulated the most points - so far, NAIT has won every year.
A donation is also made to the MS Society.
