The School of Health and Life Sciences offers 12 full-time diploma programs. These 2- to 3-year programs include one or more unpaid work experience placements to give students the real-life experience they need to succeed in the workforce.
Students can pursue careers in animal health, dental health, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic laboratory, emergency medical services, personal fitness training and respiratory therapy.
A distance Optical Sciences diploma (Eyeglasses Diploma) is also available.
Animal Health Technology focuses on practical skills used in both small and large animal practices, including lab work, X-rays and medical and surgical nursing.
The Dental Assisting program provides students with the skills, technical knowledge and clinical experience necessary to become an effective member of a dental health care team. Studies include chairside assisting procedures, reception skills and preventive home care procedures
Dental Technology prepares students to construct complete and partial dentures, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances.
Denturist Technology prepares students to meet patients’ needs for complete and partial dentures, and effectively communicate treatment options and care.
Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology combines training in both the medical laboratory and X-ray disciplines. Students analyze biological samples and learn to perform electrocardiograms and X-ray procedures.
Note: This program is designed to serve rural health centres, and practicums are completed at rural clinical sites.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography prepares students to conduct ultrasound examinations, focusing on obstetrics and gynecology, abdomen and superficial structures, adult echocardiography and vascular technology.
Magnetic Resonance provides the skills needed to perform various Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures. Students learn to function effectively in diverse settings from busy trauma centres to outpatient clinics.
Note: A 2nd discipline MRI certificate is also available for students with previous training in medical radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy or ultrasound.
Medical Radiologic Technology teaches students how to perform X-rays, including evaluating the diagnostic quality of images, patient care and quality control. Students also gain expert knowledge in radiation safety and protection practices.
Cytotechnology teaches students to prepare, analyze and screen cell samples for evidence of disease, especially cancer. The Cytotechnology program is currently under review, and applications are not being taken at this time.
Medical Laboratory Technology focuses on the analysis of human blood and body fluids for microorganisms and cellular and chemical components. Preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination is also covered.
Emergency Management is a comprehensive, distance delivered program that will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the opportunities and challenges in this dynamic, rapidly growing field. The diploma includes learning specific to each of the 4 pillars in Emergency Management: prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, with a particular focus on risk management and resiliency building at the individual, community and sector level.
Emergency Medical Technology – Paramedic (EMT-P) is an advanced-care level diploma. Students gain skills in advanced life support procedures and learn to diagnose and treat patients in a variety of medical and trauma situations.
Note: EMT-P is the final step in Alberta’s 3-step pre-hospital training. Students must complete the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training before enrolling in the EMT-P program. EMR and EMT training is available through Continuing Education.
Personal Fitness Training
The Personal Fitness Trainer program teaches principles and methods of physical training and safe exercise, nutrition, health promotion and lifestyle counselling, and business management and marketing practices.
The Personal Fitness Trainer diploma can also be completed online through Continuing Education.
Respiratory Therapy teaches students how to plan and implement therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for patients suffering from a wide range of heart and lung disorders.
