One of the qualities I love most about being physically active is how great it makes me feel! Not only does it benefit my body in developing a healthy and strong physique but it also improves my overall well being, making me mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong as well.

Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself! Exercise lights a fire in us all allowing the impossible to become possible.

My passion in life is to help people achieve their goals through exercise and well being. I challenge and motivate my clients to push themselves beyond their limits of expectation while also teaching the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Teaching my clients to embrace their body is also very important to me and is something that I strive to accomplish with my clients.

"Expose yourself to your deepest fear, after that fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes, you are free." - Jim Morrison

My Mission: To help clients set realistic goals, design a program that suits them, and educate, encourage, support, and empower them.

There are a number of reasons people choose to begin an exercise program, many of which I can relate to, and all of which I can respect. I have made the gym atmosphere a part of my life since I was sixteen. Of course there is the reasoning you always hear about…"I want to be healthy", "I want to look good", "I want to lose weight" but then there is the motive that keeps me going. Exercise gives me a break from everyday life. It helps to relieve stress and improves self-esteem and self confidence. It can be very empowering when you do something that you didn't think you could do.

I have been a personal trainer now for over a year. The most common excuse I hear from beginning clients as to why they don't work out is lack of time and motivation. To fulfill their needs, I give them a fast and effective workout that they enjoy and leave them feeling more energized to proceed with their day. My knowledge and passion for fitness, along with my strong desire to help people reach their health and fitness goals are what makes me an outstanding trainer to work with and learn from.

"I grew up as a Taekwon-Do athlete and competed internationally on Team Canada. During these years I was also an instructor at my school. But after suffering a back injury from a labor job, my focus with exercise turned from sport performance to living healthy and pain free. For me it's all about being mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. Accomplishing this for myself has made me want to share this wonderful gift with the world.

I enrolled in the Full-Time Personal Fitness Trainer diploma program at NAIT, one of the BEST experiences of my life, and graduated with honors in 2007. Since then I have done work as a strength and conditioning coach for the NAIT Women's Basketball Team; I have stayed involved with the PFT program as a tutor; I have done personal training and exercising classes at the Misericordia Hospital, with the City of Edmonton and of course here at NAIT. In early 2008 I aided my colleagues here on campus in developing the Functional Capacity Assessment for Edmonton EMS and I trained several of their recruit classes.

Whether you need to be prepared for the demands of your job, excel on the playing field in your sport, or if you just want to be happy and healthy, together we can determine the best and most enjoyable way for you to achieve your goals. It's not about fad diets or whatever you read about in a magazine, it's about what is going to work for you!"

Daily physical activity with regular exercise shapes our physical well being, mental health and the emotional strength to meet our career challenges and enhance our daily living. Whatever their career choice, successful people include regular fitness training every day. It is a pro-active solution to many of our problems.

In order to perform at a higher level, whatever the goal, we need to first function more efficiently. By reintroducing proper function to the body and improving the body's biomechanics, we can start removing the negative stresses (most often pain) from the body.

When your body stops compensating for imbalances you are able to move freely and your pain disappears, allowing you to take the next step in achieving your goals.

Kim Olson

My name is Kim Olson, and I am here to help you change your life! I believe that exercise lights a spark that all of us have within. With my skills, I promise to help light that spark, to ignite your mind, body and spirit, to light the fire of change within you. Whether your goal is to win the race or simply finish it, I will be there! Need someone to chat with while you walk laps on the track, or someone to scream at you while you push out that final rep? I will be that person! Are you an athlete, or trying to be? I can help! Are you looking for someone to listen, to help you out of your shell? I will support and empower you!

About me…
Having worked for years in the service industry, traveled all over the world, I found myself in many strange and precarious situations; I feel that I have acquired the people skills needed to help put you at ease. I strive to get to know each of my clients individually. I will tell you my stories, and remember the details of yours. I promise to laugh with you and to make you laugh.

My job is not judge, but to simply find what you like and what you need in order to give you the tools to help you get there. My dream is to make the weak strong, the unheard loud, the unseen visible and to help every person I come in contact with comfortable in their own skin.

As a personal trainer certified with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists, I can help those of you who want a trainer to guide you in the process of raising your lifestyle to a healthier level, to lose weight and to commit to including a fitness regime in your daily life.

My life has always included fitness with running, skiing (both downhill and cross-country), hiking, paddling, cycling and teaching many group exercise classes. Ten years ago my life journey made a sharp right turn and I decided to change my career path. I studied to acquire a certification with CanFitPro as a Personal Fitness Trainer but quickly realized that this did not give me the education that I needed to help people achieve their fitness goals, considering their former injuries, current limitations, muscle imbalances or medical conditions. I then enrolled in the NAIT Personal Fitness Trainer Program to achieve my diploma. This provided me with a greatly expanded knowledge in exercise physiology, anatomy and exercise design, and, together with attendance at fitness conferences to learn about new research and technology in the fitness industry and my life experience, I have the qualifications to give you the assistance that you want.

Shelly Starchuk

I want my clients to see me as the one who took time to care about them, the one who asked questions and listened to the answers, the one who didn't judge them, the one who committed to the success of their goals, the one who believed in them, the one who saw past the insecurities and saw the potential, the one who encouraged, the one they can trust, the one who could put them in a better frame of mind, the one who could lift their spirit, the one who could make them stronger, the one who was there for them, the one who empowered.

The benefits I have received from physical activity has grown into a passion to help others experience the joys of being fit and the positive impact it can have on daily living. I believe the journey to health and happiness begins with the willingness and courage to make changes in your life.

I am a certified personal trainer through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) and a certified group exercise leader through the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA).

My functional based approach to fitness will help you become stronger, faster, more confident and self assured. You will be challenged to discover strengths you can build on and weaknesses you can overcome.

"Good health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year."
