Boreal Education Program

Since its inception 15 years ago, the novaNAIT Boreal Research Institute (nBRI) has had a strong focus on forest education.

Forest education starts at an early age, and our education coordinator works with several schools in the north-central Peace region. Each year, tours and presentations inspire more than 4,000 students from kindergarten to Grade 12.

In addition, the Boreal Research Institute administers a number of awards and scholarships: the Boreal Forest Education Award is available to students in high school, and students entering post-secondary education can apply for a number of different scholarships. Students who want to pursue post-secondary training in forestry or natural resources can enrol in an array of NAIT environmental science programs.

We also offer learning opportunities for the community at large, and we encourage the public to attend one of our Boreal Nature Series information presentations.

Education Services

Maintaining a resilient resource industry depends on a skilled workforce, and the novaNAIT Boreal Research Institute (nBRI) knows that this labour force requires a steady influx of competent individuals. By providing forest education to children as young as 5, we help both industry and government overcome the challenge of recruiting and retaining resource management professionals.

Our vision is to ignite in students a passion for learning about the natural world and to help citizens learn about the forest and the forest industry.

Our services include

  • scholarships for students to pursue training and careers in natural resources
  • presentations and outdoor tours for  more than 4,000 students each year
  • community arboretums in Peace River, Grimshaw, Valleyview and High Prairie
  • community events with featured industry and government speakers
  • Boreal Education Award
  • Boreal Nature Series
