Learning & Development
NAIT is a strong supporter of lifelong learning and encourages you to take part in the many learning and development opportunities we offer.
Becoming A Master Instructor (BMI)
BMI is an instructor training program designed for those embarking on a teaching career as well as for experienced instructors. BMI is a two-part program that is mandatory for all full-time faculty at NAIT. The program is open to instructors and trainers from any educational institution, industry, government body or the public.
BMI 1 provides an interactive overview of the fundamental principles of adult learning. Through discussion, in-class exercises, critical reflection, take-home assignments, and three practice teaching sessions, participants will explore
- designing student-centred learning
- fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment
- using assessment to enhance student learning
- designing strategies to align teaching practice with professional teaching responsibilities
BMI 2 provides an interactive overview of enhanced teaching competencies that foster ongoing development as a teaching professional. Through discussion, practice, and critical reflection, participants will explore strategies that support a dynamic and inclusive student-centred community, the design of assessment tools for a variety of outcomes and learners, and the embedding of scholarly practice in their teaching.
Professional Development Day
This is an annual event that provides an opportunity for staff to participate in a variety of workshops around the themes of personal and professional development. The intent is to offer sessions that meet employees present and future needs while building a sense of community.
Leadership Development Course
This course features half-day modules with a focus on developing leadership skills, including leading yourself, others, a team and business.
Essentials of Leadership
This hands-on, skills-based training experience for new leaders provides a perspective on the application of leadership skills at NAIT. You will have the opportunity for group work and peer-to-peer learning, using live case studies from the workplace. You will have opportunities to hear and understand different perspectives, share best practices, experiment with new concepts, behaviours and skills.
People Matter - Staff Development Series
People Matter aligns with four of our values - respect, collaboration, support and accountability. This series is available to all staff and speaks to our promise of making NAIT one of Canada's best places to work.
Changing positions within NAIT is something that we encourage. Lateral transfers can enrich one's career within the organization and provide development opportunities through a variety of new experiences and challenges.
The goal of succession management is to identify those individuals interested in developing their potential to fill future leadership positions. Performance Management provides an opportunity to discuss career plans and development opportunities for current and potential leaders. The discussion between employee and supervisor should provide the guidance and opportunity for employees to excel and achieve their potential by taking advantage of applicable leadership development opportunities and enhanced responsibilities.
