In the summer of 2010, the NAIT Boreal Research Institute (nBRI) and the Peace River-based Mackenzie Forest Education Society pooled their resources, combining programs from both organizations and building a platform for expanded programming.
Through the Education Coordinator, programs traditionally offered by each of these two respected organizations – such as speaker series, grants to high school classes and interpretive hikes – will be strengthened and augmented.
Education Coordinator Katherine Haugan’s main role is to promote forestry-related education to youth, providing classes in the region with
- insights into a wide range of subjects such as forests, wildlife, vegetation and the natural environment
- environmental teaching aids, classroom presentations and forest tours
Katherine also helps students explore career possibilities in natural resources.
“My vision is to connect students and educators of all ages. I see my role as one of facilitator and hope to leverage my impact on students by connecting educators with professionals and specialists in different sectors,” says Katherine.
