Gifts of Securities
When you donate gifts of securities (stocks) to NAIT, you will receive great tax benefits and an immediate tax receipt.
Consult with your financial advisor about your personal situation and the proper steps involved to direct the securities you wish to direct to NAIT. Stocks can also be transferred electronically through a transfer agent (bank or broker).
The Government of Canada has eliminated the capital gains tax on the eligible amount of publicly traded securities when transferred directly to the registered charity of the donor’s choice. If the donor sells their securities and then donates the proceeds to NAIT, the donor is still subject to taxable capital gain.
The fair market value is determined at the date the securities are received by NAIT, and a charitable receipt is issued for the value on the closing day of transfer.
Gifts of Life Insurance
Gifts through a life insurance policy can be made by naming NAIT as a beneficiary of either a newly purchased insurance policy or an existing policy.
