Dr. Bin Xu joined NAIT as the NSERC Research Chair in Peatland Restoration in 2013. Based out of NAIT’s Boreal Research Institute in Peace River, Bin leads research focused on the restoration of sensitive peatland ecosystems. The research chair position is funded through a five-year renewable grant provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
Bin, a peatland ecologist who has a PhD in Plant Biology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has been involved in restoration/reclamation projects of peatlands disturbed by oil and gas mining and peat harvesting in Alberta and in eastern Canada.
Peatlands are able to store vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary greenhouse gas. Bin hopes to increase awareness of the importance of peatlands and find cost-effective ways to balance economic needs with those of the environment.
