The excitement was evident in coach Deanna Iwanicka's closing words: "We're learning to win!"

This enthusiasm was a natural reaction to the NAIT Ooks' 1-1 tie and 2-1 victory against the MacEwan Griffins, enough to put NAIT into sole possession of third place in ACAC standings.

The biggest individual play in the opening game was Gabrielle Pelland's second-period tally with the Ooks trailing and playing 4-on-4. From then on, NAIT gradually took control. Pelland's continued effort and some terrific play by defender Laura Stosky drew special praise from the coach.

"This is the Stosky we were hoping to get when we recruited her," Iwanicka said. "She was controlling the play, making the right moves and stepping up as we need her to."

As for Pelland: "Her attitude and effort are great examples of what this team needs right now."

Pelland helped Justine Cantley set up Kendel Jurista for NAIT's opening goal in the second half of the weekend. Lacie Richard's tally was made possible by Karne Pyle and Laura Williams.

"Our execution in the third period was great," Iwanicka said. "When our defence started to skate with the puck, things started to open up."

She described the victories as "a demonstration of what we have learned as a team.

"Initially, we couldn't hold a lead. We would panic.

"Now we're comfortable being on top. We're learning to win!"

The Ooks deserve the two-week layoff they now face before meeting Mount Royal Nov. 27 and 28.
