Badminton Ooks Return from Hawaii Recharged and Closer Than Ever

The NAIT Ooks badminton recently returned from Hawaii this past weekend after competing in the 2010 Honolulu Open. The tournament was an opportunity for the nationally ranked #2 team to compete in an internationally known tournament and undergo some serious team bonding. The team posted some outstanding results and had a great time in the sun and surf so both objectives of the trip were met.
The Ooks Sun Yang captured the Women's Singles championship, and then teamed up with partner Sinead Cheah to win the Women's Doubles title. Yang then partnered up with NAIT Assistant coach Shannon Lim and finished second in Mixed-Doubles, narrowly missing out on the elusive Triple-Crown. NAIT's Joey Vandervet and Sinead Cheah also won the Mixed-Doubles Championship while Joey also finished second in Men's Singles. The men's doubles Championship was won by NAIT assistant coaches and former College National Champions Austin Liaw and Shannon Lim. The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the effort, attitude, showing and professionalism of all the players that attended the tournament.
The trip also saw the team gel and come together. Attending a world-class luau, surfing and playing in the ocean, endless shopping excursions, and countless hours sitting on the beach all helped the team come together and will hopefully be an important element in recharging the team and helping them repeat as ACAC Team Champions.
It was another chapter in what has turned into a NAIT Badminton team tradition. The past decade has seen the team travel to Hawaii six times; 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, and now 2010. "In years that our team has traveled to Hawaii, it has been evident that the team comes back refreshed and much more cohesive," says Coach Jordan Richey. "It is a goal of the program to ensure that every player that competes within our team has an opportunity to experience the Hawaii trip".
Next up for the Ooks is ACAC Tournament #3 this weekend at Concordia. Singles Nationals qualifying will take place Feb. 6th and 7th at Red Deer College with Mixed-Doubles and Doubles Nationals qualifying as well as the Team Championship occurring Feb. 13th and 14th at NAIT. The season will culminate with the CCAA National Championships which will also be held at NAIT March 4th - 6th.
Aloha!
