Ooks Badminton Team Places 2nd at Tournament at Concordia

January 19, 2010

NAIT's badminton team returned from sunny Hawaii just in time to finish second behind the host Concordia Thunder in an ACAC tournament.

Individual performances were more than satisfactory, said head coach Jordan Richey. "The team faced some adversity and coaches are pleased to see how the players responded.

"Despite finishing second in this tournament, we all remain confident as we head into the final two league tournaments."

Success for the Ooks is especially important since the national college championships will be played at NAIT.

Joey Vandervet had a good weekend, finishing second in men's singles and first with partner Sinead Cheah in mixed doubles.

Cheah also won a title in women's doubles, teaming with Natalie Neumann, who may have created the upset of the ACAC season to this point when she defeated heavily-favoured teammate Sun Yang in singles semifinals and went on to finish second.

Another NAIT highlight involved Jonathan Chang and Romy Yamsuan, who teamed to win the men's doubles and now stand as favourites to win the ACAC men's title next month.

Another team competition, ACAC singles championships and qualification matches for the Canadian College Athletic Association nationals are all scheduled at Red Deer College Feb. 6 and 7.
