Brendan Jensen , Men's Hockey

The NAIT Athletic department is pleased to announce Brendan Jensen of the Men's Hockey team has been selected as the 2016-17 Presiden'ts Award Male Athlete of the Year. In his 2nd year at NAIT, Brendan helped backstop the Ooks to a first place in the regular season with a 22-6 record. He posted a 2.19 Goals Against Average and a .930 Save percentage during the regular season, posting a winning percentage of .842. He played in 22 of NAIT's 28 games amassing 637 saves. Brendan is a 3rd year Business Administration student from La Granada, California. He previously played one season at the University of Manitoba before joining the Ooks last season.  He also excels in the classroom as he had a 3.4 GPA during the first semester.

"Brendan is a calming influence for our team," said NAIT men's hockey coach Tim Fragle. "His consistent play allows our guys to have trust in him at all times. He prepares like a pro and is the consummate professional."

"The leadership that Brendan shows in the net is incredible," echoed NAIT Athletics Manager Gregg Meropoulis. "His team plays at ease when he is playing because they know he will make the key saves at key times."

Kassy Jajczay , Women's Soccer

The NAIT Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Kassy Jajczay has been selected as the 2016-17 President's Award Women's Athlete of the Year. The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team finished the regular season in 1st place in the North Division with a record of 9-0-1. Kassy, a 4th year Emergency Management student from Edmonton, AB, had a tremendous season. She led the ACAC with 16 goals this season including 5 game winning goals and scored in every league game.

Head Coach of the Women's NAIT Ooks Soccer Team, had the following to say about her student-athlete. "Kassy is a game player - simple as that. She can obviously score goals but can set them up as well. She's extremely competitive which motivates her for every minute of every game to keep working. She has led by example and has been such a pleasure to work with. We are so proud that she chose our program to be a part of."

Torey Hill , Women's Basketball

What a 5 year career it has been for NAIT women’s basketball player Torey Hill. She finished her regular season career by leading the Ooks to a two game sweep over the Augustana Vikings this past weekend and a first place finish in the North Division.  Torey had 43 points and 19 rebounds in the two games and her veteran leadership continued to show on the court. “Torey capped of her career regular season with the same intensity and drive that she started her career with 4 years ago,” said Head Coach Todd Warnick. “We have been blessed with her energy and competitive drive and she put all her tools on display this past weekend as she anchored us to a pair of wins to finish with our best ever regular season record”.  Torey is a 5th year Business Administration student from Viking, AB.

Jackson Jacob , Men's Basketball

Despite the NAIT Ooks dropping both of their contests to the Augustana Vikings this past weekend, Jackson continued to put up stellar numbers. On Saturday night he netted 45 points, shooting 16 for 30 from the floor and made 9 of 10 free throws. He also had 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. His 78 points in 2 games allowed him to capture the scoring title for the ACAC and the CCAA with a 29 points per game average. “Jackson’s play is maturing to a point where he is starting to understand efficiency,” said Head Coach Mike Connolly. “He has been our most consistent player all year and is going into the ACAC championship tournament playing very well”.  Jackson is a 2nd year Professional Meat Cutting student from Nassau, Bahamas.

Andy Ko , Badminton

The NAIT Ooks badminton team captured their 7th consecutive ACAC team championship this past weekend at OIds College and veteran Andy Ko was a key contributor. Andy won all 3 of his matches in the team competition then teamed up with ACAC Player of the Year Imran Wadia to capture the ACAC Men’s Doubles championship and Gold medal. The duo defeated the Concordia team of Luc-Ly Nguyen and Braxton Wong 21-18, 21-11 in the final and will now represent the ACAC at the CCAA Nationals hosted by Seneca College March 9-11 in Toronto, ON. “Andy’s confidence and consistent play is admirable and a great example for our program,” said Head Coach Sinead Cheah. “He is always supportive of his team and will be one of the ACAC’s best chances at Gold at the CCAA Nationals”.  Andy is a 3rd year Open Studies student from Edmonton, AB.

Ryo Kuramochi , Badminton

Ryo was named ACAC female player of the year this past weekend at the Conference Badminton Championships hosted at Olds College. She won both of her matches in the team event to help lead NAIT to their 7th consecutive ACAC team championship. Ryo qualified for the CCAA National championship by earning Silver in women’s singles. “Ryo is the perfect team player,” said Head Coach Sinead Cheah. “Her efforts in practices have clearly paid off and are shown in her competition results this year”.  Ryo is a 2nd year Bachelor of Business Administration student from Chiba, Japan.

Mitch Lewington , Men's Volleyball

The NAIT men’s volleyball team clinched a spot in the ACAC championships this past weekend after a home sweep of the GPRC Wolves. Mitch led his Ooks Friday with 28 assists and 4 digs in NAIT’s 3-0 win over the Wolves. He followed that up in Saturday’s 3-1 win with another 46 assists and 5 digs. “Mitch had an outstanding weekend quarterbacking our offense,” said NAIT Head Coach Doug Anton. “Mitch did a great job creating opportunities for all attackers to score and there was exceptional point production from all positions”.  Mitch is a 1st year Academic Upgrading student from Perth, Australia.

Kendra Hanson , Women's Hockey

Kendra helped the NAIT Ooks women’s hockey team sweep the Olds College Broncos this past weekend and in doing so took over the ACAC scoring lead. In Thursday’s 4-1 win in Olds, Kendra scored twice and was all over the ice. Saturday saw Kendra tally five assists in NAIT’s 9-2 victory on home ice. “Kendra does not do it for the credit or to lead the league in points but rather for her teammates and for her love of hockey,” said Head Coach Deanna Martin. “She is a great teammate and has made a real impact on the team with her motto ‘I love hockey’”. Kendra a 2nd year Emergency Management student from Thompson, MB.

Imran Wadia , Badminton

When Imran joined the NAIT Ooks badminton team this season, no one knew what impact he would eventually have on the program. Imran completed his final regular season tournament of the season this past weekend at Concordia by continuing to dominate competition. He won both the men’s singles and doubles events. He remained unbeaten on the season in men’s singles defeating teammate Nick Roque in the final 21-18, 21-14.  He then teamed up with rookie Tyler Walsh and won the doubles event defeating the NAIT team of Jeff Ko and Jason Rausch 22-20, 21-16 in the final. “As a 1st year Ook, Imran has integrated well into our team dynamic,” said NAIT Head Coach Sinead Cheah. “He is a great role model for future badminton players at NAIT”.  Imran is a 2nd year Wireless Systems Engineering student from Calgary, AB.

Kai-Li Huang , Badminton

The Ooks badminton team wrapped up their regular season this past weekend with Tournament #3 at Concordia. Kai-Li helped lead her team to a 1st place finish, winning the mixed-doubles event and finishing second in women’s singles. In mixed-doubles, she teamed up with partner Andy Ko and defeated teammates Ryo Kuramochi and Jeff Ko in the final. The singles event saw Kai-Li advance all the way to the final before falling 21-14, 21-18 to Concordia’s Takeisha Wang. “Kai-Li is a positive influence and a good mentor for our rookies this season,” said Head Coach Sinead Cheah. “She is a team player excelling this year on and off the court”.  Kai-Li is a 3rd year Open Studies student from China.
