Small towns…
A friend of mine from back home (Fairbanks, Alaska) recently sent me this picture. She woke up one morning last week to find a nice blanket of snow in her back yard. Even though I’ve only been in Edmonton for 2 years, I forget how cold it gets so early in Alaska!
I’ve spent the majority of my life in Alaska, living in a small town called North Pole, just outside of Fairbanks. Yes, I used to live in the North Pole (insert your own joke here). North Pole, Alaska has about 2,500 citizens, candy cane light posts, and boasts the one and only Santa Claus House. In fact, the credit union I used to bank with is right off of ‘Santa Claus Lane’. It’s definitely a strange feeling to grow up in a year-round Christmasey (is that a word, not sure but I’m going with it) environment such as North Pole and move to a larger city like Edmonton. I definitely appreciate the fact that there’s so much more to do here, more opportunities, more choices; having said that, I sometimes miss living in a place where everyone knows you.
As a Prospective Student Advisor for NAIT, I get the chance to visit Alberta’s small towns, many of which remind me of where I’ve come from. I’m looking forward to meeting those of you who like myself, seek the adventure that comes with moving to a new city.
