Big Me

Do you go to the movies or do you prefer to just watch them at home? What are we really buying when we are going to a movie? Is it just the movie or is there something more? Well there is the popcorn. And yes, I have a confession, I love theatre popcorn, and I love going to the movies. So I was delighted to see the movie industry is doing well.

I’m not sure what the draw is for me but I prefer watching movies to watching a number of sports baseball, curling or golf for example. You can decide for yourself but for me I would rather participate in a sport than watch it. I suppose a large number of sports fans actually go to these games not to passively watch but to participate. They question the calls, cheer on their teams, heckle the opposition, and applaud in unison to indicate approval.

Similarly, are not the best movies the ones that make you laugh out loud in the theatre, or jump in your chair, or make a tear form in the corner of your eye?

Are you like this as well? Do you agree we generally enjoy things more that we participate in? Well if so, then what are we participating in? Are we (you and I) participating at school, at work, at home, because I think if we truely are then we will likely enjoy them much more rather than just clocking time.

  1. James says:

Which sports would you rather participate in…Running? (Sorry couldn’t resist.)

I do agree with you however, in that the “best” movies are ones that draw you in and make you feel a part of it rather than just a spectator. Of course, what is “best” will vary from person to person

  2. I recently wrote this small article in my blog which I would like to share here, too:

    “Imagination World vs. Practical World:
The world around us is definitely a practical world though we always like to live in the world of imagination. The reason is simple, whatever we simply dream to do in the practical world, we can do that in our imagination world. Like, say, I really like to play soccer, but I don’t know how to play it, so what I simply do is, watch all the soccer matches and start imagining that I am there in that soccer field and playing, and making lots of goals for my team, everybody is cheering out my name, and I am becoming too difficult to handle for my opposite team. Seemed a great imagination, isn’t it?

What we forget here is, that, though we can achieve our dreams in our imagination, we can still achieve it in our practical, i.e., in real world, too. How? What we do is, we simply start looking for the solutions about how we are suppose to achieve our dreams, and here we don’t realize that we are actually working toward turning our imagination world into the real world. Like, it says that, “Rome was not built in a day,” in the same way, we ignore all the time it is taking to achieve that fantasy-into-real world and we dive into the ocean of hard work. Human has been created for this hard work. It is the task, even the almighty cannot perform, which a human being can definitely do.”

And I think if you are working in the marketing field, then it seems that all the time you have to deal a lot with imagination world, as I believe that marketing is an art of convincing the consumers (using the 4 P’s of marketing) and so you have to deal with the examples clear of any ambiguity between the world of imagination, and practical world, i.e., a real world. I am sure you can do that :)
