Aboriginal Initiatives

Accessible Education

As the country's largest provider of technical and trade-related programs, NAIT is well on its way to becoming the technical institution of choice among Aboriginal students. Our real-world approach to training employs current technologies deliver by industry-experienced instructors.

 

We recognize that access to our programs and courses can be a hurdle to prospective Aboriginal students, and in 1999, began offering outreach programs to First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners. Today, we continue to increase access to our programs on site, at NAIT campuses, and using our mobile education units, NAIT in Motion (NIMs).

 

Customized Training

NAIT's expertise goes well beyond our campus classrooms. Community, business and industry leaders look to NAIT to design, develop and deliver customized training to fit their unique needs. We can assess you comunity's needs, tailor our programming around them, and bring that programming right to you.

 

Thanks to regional campuses and NAIT in Motion, many of our courses and programs can be delivered in Aboriginal communities in Alberta and across Canada, allowing students to access training opportunities without having to relocate to urban centres.

 

Our programs range from two-day workshops to full 34-week programs. We offer:

• Upgrading and bridging programs for Aboriginal learners to earn the prerequisites to enter most of NAIT's full-time programs
• Full-time programs that mirror the full-time programs offered at NAIT campuses
• Apprenticeship programs and other technical training
• Capacity building programs for people who are already employed. Students learn new skills for meeting their on-the-job duties and responsibilities
• Labour market programs for unemployed Aboriginals to train for entry-level positions
