BLS201 Intermediate Blacksmithing
Learn to make more blacksmithing tools and produce wrought iron grill work! Students will continue to learn more about blacksmithing techniques that were introduced in BLS101. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on work, students will learn to produce a piece of wrought iron grill work encompassing basic and intermediate connection techniques. This grill will serve as a textbook of techniques you can use to solve problems and design your own work. Techniques covered include: stock calculation, upsetting right angle corners, riveting, mortise and tenon jointery, collaring, forge welding, botanical forms (flowers, leaves etc.), and heat treating tools.
Students will develop the tools they use, with strong emphasis on achieving robust tool design. Students will discuss and learn which kinds of new or recycled steel products are good for making tools. The creation of the following tools will be demonstrated:
• rivet sets

• fuller for tenons
