This lab-intensive course focuses on programming and applications of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). PLCs are rugged, computer systems that control many types of industrial processes, such as vacuum pumps in Nanotechnology. The course deals with both hardware and software aspects of using PLCs in industry. Students will identify PLC system components required for various applications and connect them to function correctly. In addition, students will create PLC and Human Machine Interface (HMI) software for controlling industrial processes. The PLC software will be ladder-based and the HMI will include menu-driven screen design as well as data-acquisition. Students will examine open-loop and closed-loop control using both analog and discrete input/output (I/O). The lab work will use General Electric (GE) Versamax PLCs, Proficy Machine Edition Ladder software, and GE Cimplicity HMI software.
Prerequisites: ELTR1265. This course is available to OPEN Studies students.
