LMC103 Value Stream Mapping

Value stream mapping (VSM) is an excellent place to start when a company begins the lean management journey. Students will learn how the value stream is defined, how VSM works, and how VSM can be used to map the flow of materials and information within the company; from the time the raw material arrives, through all manufacturing processes, until finished products are shipped.

Students will learn the importance of mapping production processes, such as cycle times, down times, in-process inventory, material moves, and information flow paths. These mapping efforts help a company to visualize the current state of the process activities and subsequently change or update processes to achieve lean objectives. Examples of additional study topics include:

• developing an action plan (Gantt chart, time-phased project plan)

• mapping the value stream (current state map)

• identifying non-value-added activities

• re-engineering of product flows on paper

• developing a future state map (conceptual)
