ML500 Phlebotomy (Venipuncture) Workshop for Health Care Professionals
This newly developed course provides health professionals with enhanced skills in the performance of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. It is also designed for health professionals who wish to add the skill of blood collection to their portfolio. It will include 6 hours of theory and 8 hours of hands on experience. A minimum of four real collections will be completed in this course. Improvement in patient safety and efficiencies in blood collection, handling and transportation will also be emphasized.The following topics will be covered:
• Anatomy and Physiology of the veins used for phlebotomy and universal precautions
• preparing for the phlebotomy procedure
• client considerations
• performance of phlebotomy and collection of the blood sample
• client identification and acceptable collection tube labeling
• proper documentation
• handling and transportation of blood samples and requisitions
• specific precautions to prevent complications
• ensuring patient safety
• special collection requirements, i.e. chain of custody documentation
Prerequisites: Applicants should be currently or previously employed in a health care setting, ie. LPN, RN, medical research. Applicants who are employed by a healthcare insurance company are also eligible.
