ML600 Electrocardiography (ECG) workshop for Health Care Professionals

This workshop is aimed at health care professionals who are performing ECGs or have performed ECGs in the past. This introductory course is designed to refresh or enhance correct technique in the performance of 12-lead electrocardiography. The workshop will include 7 hours of theory and 7 hours of hands on experience. Depending on enrolment, at least 3 electrocardiograms will be completed. Students will perform ECGs on each other and we will use digital instruments in the NAIT ECG lab.

The following topics will be covered:

• a brief review of the structures and intrinsic conduction system of the heart.

• the purpose of the following settings on the instrument: Standardization, filter setting, and paper speed.

• preparation of the client for electrocardiograph testing.

• the routine test procedure for recording the electrocardiogram.

• client identification and proper documentation.

• client considerations

• the normal cardiac cycle.

• how the electrocardiograph produces 12 views or angles of the heart.

• quality assurance for electrocardiography.

• the importance of a technically correct tracing.

• causes of artifacts that distort a tracing and ways to minimize or eliminate artifacts.
