Learn how to measure surface textures accurately. With advances in technology, the accuracy of machined components is increasing. This calls for improved control of dimensional accuracy and improved control of the texture on the working surfaces. Students will gain theoretical and practical knowledge of two surface-texture measuring techniques; comparative and direct.
Students will analyze samples to determine how machining processes, speeds and feed rates affect surface texture. The types of irregularities and elements of surface texture are reviewed, as well as blueprint reading, machining requirements and parameter definitions. Additional topics include:
• types of measuring instruments
• evaluation of surface roughness
• total measurement of machined samples
