MSIC106 Measurement of Unified Threads and Thread Gauges

Go hands-on and learn to measure screw threads, nuts and bolts. Students will also learn to assess and measure thread gauges. Students will discover that tolerances on screw threads are usually inspected with thread gauges, but the thread gauges themselves must also be measured.

Students will also learn about the relatively complicated geometry of screw threads; which must be clearly envisaged before measurement can be attempted. Students will practice measuring a wide range of commercial-sized nuts and bolts. Additional study topics include:

• unified threads

• thread nomenclature

• threaded fasteners

• thread micrometers

• 3-wire method

• the profile projector

Prerequisite: MSIC105
