A Look to the Future

Over the next ten years, NAIT anticipates that total enrolment will grow by about 50 per cent, from the current level of 72,000 students, to an estimated total of 108,000 students. NAIT as a well coordinated, logical plan to accommodate this increased enrolment and, at the same time, create a world-class technical institute that will position Alberta at the forefront of a knowledge-based economy for many years to come.

NAIT has a comprehensive, well planned and logical strategy to work with partners in business, industry and government to significantly increase NAIT’s capacity to train students in high-demand fields. NAIT has previously filed with the Government of Alberta (GoA), business cases and project documents totaling about $1 billion, of which $750 million is requested from the GoA, with the remaining $250 million to be raised through a combination of NAIT, the NAIT Campaign, the Access to the Future Fund, the sale of Patricia Campus, and the federal government. NAIT’s business cases include enrolment projections, capital cost estimates, operating revenue and expense estimates, cash flow requirements and other pertinent information for each project.

Today, NAIT has ten Edmonton-area operations. Our strategy involves consolidation of all of these operations on three sites within the next ten years, namely:

  • NAIT Main Campus (11762 - 106 street)
  • NAIT Ralph KIein Campus, a 151- acre site south of Ellerslie Road and east of the QE2 (NAIT is currently working with the department of Infrastructure and transportation to complete the acquisition of this land, and the subsequent transfer of the property to NAIT)
  • NAIT Souch Campus (7110 Gateway Boulevard).

In approximately 25 years, the plan is to relocate the programs from the Souch Campus to the NAIT Ralph Klein Campus, which will then complete the goal of eventually consolidating all of NAIT’s Edmonton-area operations on two sites.

The campus development vision for Main Campus is presented in Figure 4 and the vision for the NAIT Ralph Klein Campus is presented in Figure 5 on the following page. Various buildings on these two campus plans are cross-referenced to the stages of development that are explained in the sections that follow.

Our efficient, cost-effective blueprint will
