HP Centre wins top Alberta masonry design award

It may look like just bricks and mortar, but the NAIT HP Centre was the clear winner at the Alberta Masonry Design Awards on April 20, taking home the Presidential Award.

The Presidential Award honours the construction project that demonstrates the most significant skill, artistry, and execution.

"NAIT is thrilled the HP Centre has been recognized for its beautiful masonry work," said David Janzen, Vice-President Administration and Chief Financial Officer. "It is vital we recognize building architect Cohos Evamy, general contractors PCL - Maxam, engineer WCW Joint Venture, masonry contractor Scorpio Masonry (Northern) Inc., as well as masonry suppliers Steel Industrial Products Ltd., Soprema Inc. and Fero Corporation."

On behalf of the design team, Tom Sutherland, partner at Cohos Evamy, expressed his appreciation for the honour.

"We believe the use of masonry has been key in the success of this project in that it reinforces the original bold modernist expression of the 1950s campus, it provides visual grounding for the building's core element, and it enhances the upscale, high-tech program of the building," he said in a news release.
