On-Air Personalities

Aki Jonasson

Aki Jonasson grew up in the land of the ice & snow: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Raised by hippies, most of her earliest memories include drawing, painting, or teaching herself how to play whatever musical instrument happened to be hanging around. At age 6, Aki spent half a year in a straw hut on a remote Fijian island (survived a hurricane), drove all the way around New Zealand, and scootered all the way around the Cook Islands. Right after surviving Y2K at age 10, she needed a change of scenery and visited the bright, flashy Las Vegas, barren Arizona deserts, Los Angeles overpass jungles, Disneyland (where they charge $8 for a water bottle), and then road-tripped home in a 1970's motorhome via Route 66 back up to Whitehorse.

In high school, Aki was known to be a great artist but never took a “proper” art class until her last year. After being told her artistic "technique" was wrong, she focused on photography and experimented with antique cameras and pinhole cameras she made. Her other main focus was music. She stayed after school most days to play in a jazz band where she switched between piano, organ, drums and percussion, bass guitar, rhythm guitar, clarinet, and occasional accordion (all self-taught). During her last year, she helped create a credited course in her high school that concentrated on studio recording and sound.

The rest is history, and here she is finishing her third semester of NAIT’s Radio program. She has taken a liking to Production, and tries her best to apply her musical knowledge to her produced spots. She loves searching for “a sound” and experimenting with it. Discovering hundreds of records and a portable turntable in her attic at an early age, Aki took a liking to 1960s and 70s psychedelic and garage rock. Ever since then, her hobby is collecting obscure songs, underground recordings and forgotten albums... and playing accordion on the side.

Every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., catch her playing the music she grew up with and spent years collecting on her show, Strychnine.

Brett Plaxton

When Brett was growing up, he had five siblings to get around just so he could his parents attention for a few seconds, so he had no choice but to be loud and outgoing.

Here’s a cool fact, he has a twin sister and that isn’t a lie, along with two other sisters and two brothers. He was born and raised on a farm by beautiful Sangudo, Alberta and has always had a passion for radio. One day, after pondering on what to do with life, he happened to be listening to one of his favourite stations, 96.7 The Rig in Whitecourt, thought that being on the radio would be a sweet gig, and it was decided that he wanted to do radio.

Brett graduated from Sangudo High School with a whopping 15 people in his class and is currently taking the Radio program at NAIT. After working as a beekeeper for five years, then at a Best Buy, for a handyman and then a landscaper, Brett feels he made the right decision in going into radio. He also volunteered on the street team for Lite 95.7 this summer.

When Brett isn’t doing something radio related, you can find him listening to music, hanging out with friends, watching movies or classic Doctor Who episodes or reading a good book, probably something by Hunter S. Thompson. You can also watch Brett as the Ook Mascot at almost every NAIT Ooks game. Catch Brett’s show, The Epitome of Rad, every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on NR92.

Gram Mosimann

Gram Mosimann, he may look like an overweight super hero from a crummy 1970’s B-Movie, but in reality? He is a starving NAIT student working his tail off for a reference; in the off chance someone will pity him enough to let him on-air one day. Self described as a rejected Muppet, he is equal parts geek, nerd, sports guy, and you will find Gram often watching the Eskimos, whilst sporting a Star Wars T-Shirt.

He made his earliest childhood dream come true by becoming a Zamboni driver! He has been apart of minor hockey as a player or referee for seven years, so working as a Zamboni driver is his wayof giving back to the sport that has been such a huge part of his life. Beforestarting at NAIT, he dabbled in acting and has appeared in eight different stage productions.

He started out at NAIT wanting to become a CFL colour analyst, but he was swayed over by the music side of radio! As an avid lover of all kinds of rock, you can expect to pick up all sorts of somewhat quirky factoids on the music he loves while listening to him on NR92. You can tune into Gram’s ramblings on his solo show “The Other Side” lighting up Internet radio from the scenic NR92 Studios, Monday's 8 to 10.

Gram (hereafter refered to as "The Personality") is not responsible for any loss, damage, theft, dysentry, or combustion that may occour to the listener whilst listening to the The Personality.

His work has been featured in The Hockey News, on CTV News Channel and in the McKeen’s Hockey Yearbook. Matthys Pischke

Who is this gorgeous creature you might be asking yourself? Where does he come from and how can I get to know him better? Be patient. All will be explained in good time.
Matthys (pronounced [mah-TYSE]) is small town guy. He grew up just outside of Drayton Valley in rural Alberta. His father grew up not far from there, around a hamlet called Tomahawk. The prettier half of his parental pairing grew up down south around the Crows Nest Pass area. Matthys went to a Catholic school from kindergarten to grade nine. He then switched to the public high school called Frank Maddock High School where he graduated from.
While in high school Matthys was an active part of the campus life. He acted in plays and musicals, and also did the DJ work for the school dances. This led to a part time gig DJing weddings, Christmas parties etc. Working late nights DJing, Matthys also had an awesome alter-ego of lifeguard/instructor at the local swimming pool. DJing is what really started the passion for radio, while shouting at small children all day got the vocal cords well developed into the loudmouth he is today. After high school, Matthys wasn’t immediately accepted into the Radio and Television program, so he went to work in the oilfield as an instrumentation apprentice until January, when he finally was accepted into NAIT.
Now that you know who Matthys is, check out his after-hours request show on NR92.com on Saturdays at 4 p.m.until 6 p.m.. Find it on Facebook under the name “Whatever Floats Your Boat.” Also follow him on twitter @matthyspischke.

Scotty Hackman

What can you say about Scott Hackman... A recent study conducted at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology has said that the best course of action is to say nothing at all, for Scott will quickly correct any statement, regardless of truth.

The man was born of humble means. Raised in a farming community, Scott quickly learned to cultivate both his personality and the fields that he tended to. Music was identified as a talent for the young man, as by the age of seven, Scott had mastered I’ll make love to you by Boyz II Men on the piano.  Elected as the president of his high school’s student council, it was evident early on that Scott was born to serve and lead his peers. Despite his talent, charisma, and intoxicatingly gorgeous appearance; Scott manages to carry himself to this day with the highest degree of class and humility.

Scott has fostered his desire to communicate through the medium of radio. Amongst other endeavours, Scott currently is an announcer on NR92.com, NAIT’s campus radio station. Hosting two shows, his talents are reflected through a mix of opinion (although Scott mentions that it’s not opinion if it’s truth), musical talent and knowledge of worldly topics. Scott has also been called the next prime minister of the global community, and his campaign platform can be found on twitter - @scottthatcounts. He really is the Scott that counts. Period.

Alana Snow

Alana grew up competitively cross-country skiing in the Rocky Mountains. Like her last name she loves snow and likes to think she came into this world on a giant snowflake verses a stork. After high school she went to university for both Social Sciences and then Drama. Eventually she made the tough decision to drop out and headed to Banff. However after pouring a continuous stream of coffee on a customer’s hand, it became apparent serving wasn’t a career choice for her. That’s when she decided to apply to the NAIT Radio Broadcasting program. Months before school started, bored in a restaurant, Alana decided to read her brother one of her raps, an up to then well-kept secret. He laughed once, but that was all the encouragement she needed. Now Alana calls herself Miss Snowy creating a website MissSnowy.com to showcase her raps and music videos. At night when she dreams she dreams of a Winter Wonderland where she is the Queen living in an ice castle in her Miss Snowy Empire. Alana loves Hunter boots, dancing, and playing dress up. In the future Alana sees herself being a radio anouncer, hopefully at a sation that allows her to water her Empire so it continues to grow. Listen to Alana on her all rap show Ballars ’R’Us Wednesday from 5-6.

Matt Van Boeyen

Matt Van Boeyen was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, in the late eighties.  The #1 song when he was born was Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing, a song that irks him to this very day.  Growing up in the mountains, Matt developed a love of staying inside and being really bad at sports.  He often spent time volunteering at the local soup kitchen.  Eventually he moved to Edmonton Alberta to take the Theatre Arts Program at MacEwan University, before realizing he hated both acting and actors.  Upon graduation Matt spent time in Cardston, AB, the Mormon capital of the province. Being a completely dry town, Matt became used to taking weekly trips to Lethbridge to buy liquor. For the next two years Matt worked with Alberta Opera, touring children’s musicals across the country.  Dressing up as a dancing frog and a wicked witch could only sustain him for so long however, and he applied to start the Radio Program at NAIT in January 2011.  Some of Matt’s interests include Skechers Shape Ups, cute girls, and the Vancouver Canucks (not necessarily in that order).  He is thrilled to be a member of team NR92, and happy to work with so many great individuals here at NAIT.  Listen for his after hours shows, The Matt Van Boeyen Show Mondays at 5:00,and Skinny and Mean with Chelsea Bird Thursdays at 4:30.

Sheldon Paul

There are three types of people... Those who are good at math, those who wish they were good at math, and radio folk.   It’s Sheldon Paul, that falls (with an audible “thud”) under that third category.

Aside from the daytime NR92 show rotations, Sheldon hosts  the Sunday Hangover here on NR92.com, every Sunday afternoon from 4 to 5.

Aside from announcing, Sheldon’s interests lie in promotions, sales and audio production. Sheldon also loves writing commercials and voicing them as well.

The stork dropped Mr. Paul off in late May 1989 in Edmonton, Alberta- 20 years late, as his collection of retro vinyl would hint.   Although born in and currently residing in Alberta’s capital city, Sheldon has been no stranger to new places. He has lived all over our beautiful country- including north in Grande Prairie, south in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, east in Saint John, New Brunswick.... but it’s all led him back to the City of Champions.

Radio found Sheldon.  Back on New Years Eve 1998, Kevin Albers (of the SUN-FM morning show in Grande Prairie) gave Sheldon his first glimpse into radio- by giving the already-talkative 9-year-old the mic for a couple minutes to talk about the best things about the holiday season... The rest was history...

Hmmm, history? No, it’s the present... and the future for this aspiring radio personality.

Sheldon has helped out with charitable organizations such as Ronald McDonald House Charities- volunteering for McHappy Day since 2000.  You would also catch Sheldon helping out at school sports games and other events during grade school.

This guy is a rock n’ roll encyclopaedia...  Which is fine, but in no other place does his musical knowledge benefit him than in the on- air booth (which happens to be where he feels the most alive).  He has studied rock music almost religiously- having also met a few of his musical heroes- Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger of The Doors, Jeff Beck, Roky Erickson, Ian Astbury of The Cult, The Trews, Honeymoon Suite, Matt Mays... and many more to come.

He also loves hockey- he follows the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, and the Prince George Cougars in the WHL.   Concert-going, karaoke and camping also top his list of hobbies. Oh, and beer.
