The word avionics is a combination of aviation and electronics. Avionics technicians are responsible for the installation and maintenance of aircraft electronic systems. In recent years, the aircraft industry has experienced an explosive increase in the application of digital-based communications and navigation systems. On-board computers now control vital flight functions of large airliners from takeoff to automatically controlled landings. Current employment surveys confirm there is a continually increasing shortage of trained personnel in aircraft maintenance technologies in Canada and throughout the world.
The Avionics Engineering Technology program at NAIT is a two-year Transport Canada-accredited diploma program offered by Electronics Engineering Technologies. Graduates achieving the academic and attendance requirements are recognized as meeting the training component necessary to receive an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - Avionics licence from Transport Canada. These students also receive credit toward part of the experience requirement of the AME-E licence.
Students receive their training at the electronics training facilities on the NAIT Main Campus and at the NAIT Aviation Training Centre. The Aviation Training Centre includes avionics aircraft and shop facilities, allowing students to receive industry-based training.
