The cytotechnologist works in a specialized field of laboratory medicine that involves using a microscope to evaluate cells for evidence of cancer and other diseases.
Year 1 of the Cytotechnology program consists of 39 weeks of classroom and laboratory instruction. Students must successfully complete all Year 1 courses before proceeding to Year 2, which is 49 weeks in length and is spent at an affiliated clinical training site in Edmonton or Calgary. Year 2 includes exposure to essential clinical experience augmented by appropriate theoretical lectures.
The NAIT Cytotechnology program will appeal to those with an interest in cell biology and tumor pathology.
For applicants who may be interested in other laboratory based programs, NAIT also offers the following programs: Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Assisting, and Combined Laboratory and X-Ray.
