Graphic Sign Arts

In the past decade, the sign industry has grown to become a dynamic, competitive industry that needs qualified individuals with a mixture of design capabilities and computer skills. Due to the ever-changing use of technology, production techniques are always being updated. Gone are the days of using just wood, paint and brushes. Today the industry uses composite materials, aluminum, plastics and PVC as well as computer cut self-adhesive vinyl, four-colour process printing, thermal printing and more.

The Graphic Sign Arts program is the only program in Canada that provides detailed training for people interested in pursuing a career in the sign industry. The emphasis is on the graphic design and graphic production of signs, which is primarily computer-based. For graphic design, the student is trained in design and layout, as well as the effective and appropriate use of colour. For production, the student is introduced to and trained on a variety of computer-aided equipment, such as plotters, and learns CNC routing and large-format digital printing.

The intent of the program is to provide the student with practical, hands-on experience by producing a wide variety of signage, using high-tech and traditional methods. The student is introduced to special techniques, processes, procedures and materials used in the industry. Many hours will be spent in supervised areas designing and completing signs on various substrates such as plastic, wood, glass, vehicles and vinyl banners.

A two-week work experience is included in Semester 2 of the program.
