Industrial Heavy Equipment Technology

This program is designed for the individual who wants to enter the heavy equipment repair field as a technologist. The objective of this program is to prepare graduates to assume productive roles in industry and, with the addition of work experience, to excel in the areas of troubleshooting, system analysis, training, leadership or sales in the heavy equipment field.

Activity in the areas of mining, logging, trucking, agriculture, transportation, gas processing, oilfield servicing and construction has resulted in a demand for heavy equipment service personnel with an advanced level of technical training to tackle the challenge of advancing technology. The heavy equipment service industry encompasses all on-highway and off-highway mobile equipment as well as engine-powered stationary equipment.

Industrial Heavy Equipment Technology is a two-year program consisting of four 17-week semesters. Semesters 1 and 2 contain selected material from the Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship training and some academic and technical courses. The training is divided approximately equally into theoretical and practical learning. Semesters 3 and 4 will contain selected material from apprenticeship training and further academic and technical courses. Local industrial field trips will be taken.

The applicant should have a genuine interest in mechanical systems and a desire to understand the underlying theoretical principles that govern machine operation and design. The work often involves analytical troubleshooting and problem solving. Those considering this program should be eager to accept the challenge of intricate problems and find gratification in finding a successful solution.
