Captioning and Court Reporting

Captioning and court reporters are highly skilled professionals who can capture speech at speeds of 225 words per minute and higher. Using an electronic shorthand machine and sophisticated computer technology, reporters translate a conversation virtually simultaneously to the printed word. This unique and amazing skill is often mistaken for voice recognition, providing printed text in a variety of settings—broadcast captioning of live television programming; courtrooms and other legal proceedings; business conferences; and the classroom.

Captioning and court reporters open doors for those with hearing loss, allowing students to hear lectures at colleges and universities and enabling people to attend and interact at meetings and other events. They find their work personally rewarding.
