TOWES - Essential Skills for a Productive Workforce

As the workplace evolves in the 21st century, organizations are seeking employees who can complement their technical skills with essential skills such as problem-solving, leadership, reading, and numeracy. These skills are needed in all careers and are transferable from occupation to occupation.

TAKE THE TOWES TEST
Employers can now access Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) testing through NAIT. There are over 200 occupations for which this testing can be used. Do your employees have the essential skills they need to succeed?

Using the TOWES method, employers can pinpoint skills gaps and provide focused training to improve productivity in the workplace.

PROVEN SUCCESS
Recently, NAIT ran a pilot project with its carpentry apprentice program. The students were given a Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) to assess their skills in reading, document use, and numeracy. Upgrading needs were addressed within the program where, traditionally, only technical training was offered.

The pass rate in the first-year carpentry program jumped from 73% to 100% with the introduction of the pilot Essential Skill intervention.
