You’re a gasfitter. You know how to size, install, test, adjust and service natural gas and propane equipment ranging from residential furnaces to industrial boilers. You’re comfortable repairing and extending gas mains, and installing, repairing and servicing pipes and fittings between mains and buildings.

But you want to learn more, like how to repair underground gas mains and distribution pipes, or how to convert appliances to use other fuels, like propane or natural gas. Maybe you need more training installing vents and flues for gas-consuming appliances, like ranges, dryers, barbecues, etc. At NAIT, where we are the largest pipe trades training facility in Alberta, we’re here to teach you everything you need to know.

Apprenticeship is a method of gaining the expertise needed to become a skilled tradesperson. This is done through a combination of on-the-job experience and classroom training.

Most apprenticeship programs are 3-4 periods in length, with an average of 8 weeks for each training period. In addition, there are specific allotments of on-the-job training hours associated with each period, so most apprentices complete 1 period per calendar year.

Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

If you like working independently with little direction or supervision, as well as job security and variety, then you will enjoy working as a gasfitter.

Gasfitters work both indoors and outdoors at physically demanding tasks. They are sometimes called in an emergency related to gas lines or leaks. As you work with explosive gases and power tools, a high priority is placed on safety training.

To be successful as a gasfitter, you must have:

  • the ability to work with little supervision
  • the skill to diagnose problems
  • the ability to lift in excess of 25 kgs
  • mechanical, electrical and electronic aptitude
  • manual dexterity
  • customer service skills

Gasfitters train at the Suncor Energy Centre for Piping Systems Technology at Patricia Campus (12204 – 149 St NW), with some training for gas utility operators being delivered at the Enform facility in Nisku.
