Rig Technician

This program will train you to operate oil and gas drilling rigs. There are 3 levels of rig technician, each with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership.

  • Rig Technician 1 (motorhands) work under the direction of derrickhands and drillers.
  • Rig Technician 2 (derrickhands) work under the direction of drillers.
  • Rig Technician 3 (drillers) supervise crews and report directly to the drilling rig manager.

Career Options

Rig technicians are employed by drilling contractors who own and operate oil and gas well drilling rigs and who contract with oil producers to drill wells. Rig technicians may be promoted to rig managers, or to other management positions within the drilling industry.
