You want to be a roofer. You want to learn how to prepare and apply protective coverings to flat and sloped roof surfaces on all types of buildings.

You already know how to follow construction plans and specifications, and you’re familiar with most types of roofing, including steep and flat roofing. But you want to learn more, like how to apply a variety of substances and systems such as elastomeric or thermos plastic roof membranes. You may also need more experience using different building materials, like asphalt and wood shingles, concrete tiles or PVC membranes. At NAIT, where we have been offering the Roofer apprenticeship program since the mid-1970s, we’re here to teach you everything you need to know:

-theoretical foundation for roofing

-trade mathematics

-correct use and interpretation of shop drawings, blueprints, and building codes

Apprenticeship is a method of gaining the expertise needed to become a skilled tradesperson. This is done through a combination of on-the-job experience and classroom training.

Most apprenticeship programs are 3-4 periods in length, with an average of 8 weeks for each training period. In addition, there are specific allotments of on-the-job training hours associated with each period, so most apprentices complete 1 period per calendar year.

Hands-on, industry-relevant training

If you enjoy physical activity, working with your hands, being outdoors and aren’t afraid of heights, then you will enjoy working as a roofer.

Roofers also have the security of steady employment as there is always a demand for repair work, even when construction activity slows. During nice weather, roofers can be asked to work considerable overtime.

Training at NAIT

The Roofer apprenticeship term is:

  • 4 years (four 12-month periods)
  • minimum 1420 hours on-the-job training in period 1, 2 and 3
  • 6 weeks of technical training each year for period 1, 2 and 3
  • minimum 1600 hours on-the-job training in period 4 (there is no technical training component)

Enter the workforce with confidence

As a roofer, you will most often be employed by roofing contractors on construction or repair jobs. Some roofers are members of unions. Employment is steady and roofers are always in demand, as most roof systems require regular replacement every 15-30 years.

Roofers who are knowledgeable about different roof systems may find opportunities in education, technical marketing, inspection and supervisory roles. Some roofers become contractors themselves.
