Disaster and Emergency Management
The Disaster and Emergency Management (EMGT) Program is a comprehensive, distance-delivered program that provides students with a fundamental understanding of the opportunities and challenges in this dynamic, rapidly growing field. Practitioners in this area need to have a thorough understanding of the entire Disaster and Emergency Management system, as well as directly-related practical skills, to effectively prepare governments, industries, communities, individuals and businesses to effectively mitigate against the risk of harm or loss resulting from natural, technological, and intentional hazards. As the profession continues to evolve, so must those tasked with safeguarding people, the environment, property, critical infrastructure and the economy. This program includes a focus on current and emerging trends and issues related to building resiliency, business continuity, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and enabling a whole-of-society approach to Disaster and Emergency Management.
This 60-credit diploma is designed to meet the needs of students new to this field of study, as well as students who have some practical experience in the field but lack the theoretical foundation of the holistic system and/or recognized credentialing.
All courses are facilitated by recognized professionals and experts in the field and consist of clearly laid out lessons with weekly activities that must be completed. NAIT has created a flexible learning pathway with some of the program courses being available as Open Study courses, a varying selection of courses being offered year-round, and delivery of the program in a 24/7 accessible online format.
Graduates from this program will be well-positioned to be successful as entry-level practitioners across a variety of sectors. For students that wish to continue their learning, NAIT has worked to create additional pathways towards Undergraduate degrees. Notably, pathways have been confirmed for:
- Bachelor of Technology (NAIT) See http://www.nait.ca/program_home_78657.htm
