Insulator (Heat and Frost)

You want to be an insulator. You already know how to apply non-conductive materials to prevent and reduce the passage of heat, cold and sound on industrial, plumbing, heating and air conditioning equipment. You’re familiar with various types of insulation and applications.

But you want to learn more, like how to repair different types of thermal and acoustical insulation, including calcium silicate, glass foam, mineral wool, Styrofoam or fibreglass. Maybe you want more training on how to fit insulation around obstructions, or how to finish insulated surfaces with metal cladding or canvas.

Here are some of the other subjects covered in the Insulator apprenticeship program at NAIT:

-weatherproofing with canvas jacketing, PVC, aluminum, stainless steel and mastic

-asbestos removal and abatement

-cutting, fabricating and installing fibreglass, mineral wool, foamglass, calcium silicate, polystyrenes and polyurethanes

Delivery Options:

    Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

    If you aren’t afraid of working at heights and like to complete precise tasks, then you’ll enjoy working as an insulator.

    Insulators work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in cramped or potentially hazardous circumstances, such as on ladders or scaffolding. You will often work using materials that are dusty, itchy or toxic. Therefore, safety precautions including the use of respirators, coveralls and safety glasses are paramount.

    To be successful as an insulator, you must have:

    • manual dexterity
    • the ability to lift up to 25 kgs
    • the agility required to work in cramped spaces
    • the willingness to work in hot and cold environments

    Training at NAIT

    The Insulator apprenticeship term is:

    • 3 years (three 12-month periods)
    • minimum of 1600 hours on-the-job training each year
    • 7 weeks of technical training each year
    Insulator

    Enter the workforce with confidence

    As an insulator, you’ll be employed by construction companies, insulation contractors or industrial plants. This occupation can be subject to business cycle swings, leading to periods of unemployment.

    Insulators can advance to supervisory positions, such as foreman or superintendent, or may become estimators, who review blueprints and determine how much material is needed and how long the work will take.

    Tuition & Fees

    The tuition and fee amounts below are estimates based on current academic year’s rates. For financial planning purposes, please use these totals as an approximate estimate of your costs. Actual fees may vary by term and enrolment activities. Students who take all of their courses online are exempt from U-Pass, Health & Dental, and Recreation & Athletics fees. All fees are subject to change. Please refer to the tuition and fees page for more detailed information.

    How to Apply

    Complete an apprenticeship application & contract form

    Effective November 1, 2014, you must fillout the application located on the MyTradesecrets website for Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board staff to determine if you are eligible for status as an indentured apprentice.

    Dates & Deadlines

    Once you are an indentured apprentice, you can review the availability and start and end dates of the program you are interested in. Log into your MyTradesecrets profile and do a search under the Class Registration section. Then you can determine the schedule that best fits your needs.

    We recommend submitting your program application at least 90 days before the application deadline.
