Disaster and Emergency Management is an ever-evolving field of practice; its concepts, organization, strategies, tools, and best practices are refined through the response and recovery from each major disaster event, wherever it occurs in the world. Emergency, crisis or disaster management is framed by a number of concepts and models that are almost universal in their application. Students will gain insight into the different types of hazards that contribute to disaster risk, the components (pillars) of disaster and emergency management, the "all-hazards" approach commonly referred to in this field, and the general frameworks used to most effectively manage these events. Students can also expect to learn about concepts and strategies that guide the necessary stakeholder collaboration in all aspects of disaster and emergency management work. This course is foundational for all learning in future disaster and emergency management courses.
