Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is an approach used to identify and reduce the underlying drivers of disaster risk. DRR is fundamentally linked to sustainable development and in particular the vulnerability and exposure of people, the environment, and our critical systems to hazards. This is the area in which Disaster and Emergency Management practitioners must focus their efforts and resources in order to better manage risk through prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and risk transfer efforts. Students will learn about the Sendai Framework and Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the legislation and standards that guide DRR activities in Canada and around the world. Students can also expect to learn about the risk assessment process and methodology, which is fundamental for all subsequent activities in planning, process/policy development, and exercise design. DRR provides a critical framework to guide efforts to build resiliency across all sectors and systems and is critical for all future-forward practitioners to understand and employ in their practice.
