Disaster events that involve dangerous goods can have significant, long-lasting, and far-reaching impacts on human lives, the environment, and critical infrastructure, and these events are becoming more frequent in our busy, interconnected, and interdependent communities. While dangerous goods legislation and training have historically focused mostly on the transportation sector and fire services, it is also necessary for Disaster and Emergency Management practitioners to have a good working knowledge of what the classes of dangerous goods are, what the risks are associated with them, and typical mitigative and response actions/tools related to these risks. Students will also learn about the legislation dealing with explosions, production hazards, spills, pipelines, and other modes of transportation, along with industry-specific regulations, standards, and best practices relating to the planning, training, response, and recovery from dangerous goods events.
