Exercises are a critical activity to help Disaster and Emergency Management practitioners and stakeholders test and validate their plans, identify critical gaps in processes or resources, explore opportunities for increased collaboration, and gain confidence and clarity in their roles so that when a disaster or emergency event occurs, they are ready to take action. Exercises need to be carefully designed with clear goals and objectives, and they can take on a variety of formats that differ in scope, resources, accessibility (virtual or in-person), and costs. In this course, students will gain insight into the concepts, processes, strategies, and best practices related to the development, conduct, and evaluation of disaster and emergency management exercises. Students will also learn about working as part of a diverse exercise team and develop fundamental skills related to interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and group collaboration. These concepts will enhance students' understanding of the importance of training and exercise programs in all sectors of disaster and emergency management.
