A working knowledge of how to manage a unionized workforce, along with collective bargaining, collective agreement administration and grievance arbitration are necessary for human resources professionals. Students will study labour-management relations in Canada with particular emphasis on Alberta labour relations. Specifically, topics of the roles of union, employers, and government in labour relations of union certification, typical collective agreements clauses, collective bargaining, strikes and lockouts, public sector unionization, discipline in a unionized environment, and grievance handling and arbitration, will be explored.
