  • Credits: 4.50

This course is a continuation of MICB1202 A. Students will learn the concepts and laboratory techniques required to process clinical microbiology specimens, including basic specimen culturing, direct smear staining, and methods for determining respiratory and atmospheric growth conditions required for microbial growth. The theory of the bacterial cell, its function, anatomy, biochemistry and bacterial metabolism will also be discussed. Emphasis is on recognition of microbial cellular and colonial morphology, physiological characteristics, growth requirements, and key tests used for differentiation and identification of clinically relevant microbes including bacteria, fungi, and parasites that can cause disease at various body sites. Students will also be introduced to the concept of antimicrobial testing. Laboratory exercises will provide practical experience, complementing the theoretical components.
