Biomedical technologists install, service, and manage networked medical devices. This lab/lecture course will introduce students to the concepts of networking and interfacing with medical devices as well as how medical data is archived. The theory will include; networking fundamentals, protocols, topologies, networking hardware, wireless technologies, network security and PACS functionality basics. Lab time will allow students to discover the following: Construct a basic network using the various network devices, how wireless technology is used with medical devices, the use of network monitoring tools, various security strategies employed in a network setting, and work with a functional PACS (picture archiving and communication system).
