From overwhelmed to the honour roll: Your gift makes a difference in students' lives
For Destiny Halliday, safety’s not just a career pat
h, it’s part of who she is. Growing up on a farm near Slave Lake, she learned from a young age to spot hazards and has wanted to protect others around her.
As a NAIT Occupational Health and Safety student, Destiny's now putting her passion for safety into practice. Her educational journey, however, hasn’t been easy. Last year, balancing full-time studies and part-time work left her overwhelmed.
“I was working seven days a week with no days off,” she recalls. “It felt like I was drowning.”
To her relief, Destiny received two student awards supported by NAIT's donors. It eased her financial pressure, gave her peace of mind, and allowed her to focus on her studies. Her hard work paid off, too, when she made the dean’s honour roll for both semesters.
Then, near then end of her first-year, she received life-changing news: she and her partner were expecting their first child. Now back in school part-time, Destiny’s more determined than ever to continue her studies and build a safer future in the hygiene field. And she’s grateful for the support received along the way as she prepares to welcome her new baby in December.
“I'm so appreciative of people that are willing to invest in education for future generations,” she says. “That support has meant more to me than I can say in words. I’m just so thankful.”
