NAIT Celebrates Daniel Yeung

As one of Canada’s leading experts in dental technology, Daniel W. Yeung (Dental Laboratory Technology ’81) has built a career marked by technical excellence, mentorship, and a deep commitment to lifting others along the way. After immigrating to Canada from Hong Kong as a high school senior, he discovered his path at NAIT in the Dental Laboratory Technology program—an experience he describes as foundational to the trajectory that followed. Since graduating in 1981, Daniel has spent more than four decades shaping the dental technology field while steadily strengthening the profession’s connection to education and community.

A career built on expertise, innovation, and mentorship

Daniel began his career at Universal Dental Laboratories in 1982, becoming a partner just three years later and eventually serving as company president. His technical reputation grew quickly: manufacturers regularly sought his input on emerging dental materials, and he became one of the few non‑dentists granted corporate membership and the title of distinguished partner by the Edmonton and District Dental Society—recognition reserved for leaders advancing the profession’s standards and tools. But technical expertise was only part of his contribution. Daniel transformed his lab into a training centre, organizing continuing education sessions, speaker events, and hands‑on demonstrations. Those efforts helped raise the bar for dental technology practices across Alberta and gave students and early‑career technologists rare access to advanced training environments.

Longstanding support for NAIT and a legacy of giving back

Daniel’s impact at NAIT spans nearly three decades. Since 1997, he has supported the Dental Technology program as a mentor, donor, employer, and advocate. He has regularly welcomed NAIT students into his lab—giving them access to equipment, techniques, and real‑world experience that strengthen their readiness for industry. Through Universal Dental Laboratories and his personal philanthropy, Daniel has invested in NAIT students through scholarships and in‑kind support, including thousands of face shields during the COVID‑19 pandemic so dental students could continue their labs safely. He also established an endowment supporting students in both Dental Technology and the Bachelor of Business Administration – Entrepreneurship & Innovation programs; to date, the fund has already provided 20 students with financial support, with many more to come.

Daniel’s long relationship with NAIT has been recognized through multiple honours: the Alumni Award of Distinction (2006), inclusion among NAIT’s Top 50 Alumni (2012), an Honorary Degree (2013), and a National Philanthropy Day Award (2022). Inspired by his mother—who raised 14 children and still found ways to help others—Daniel sees giving back as both a responsibility and a privilege. His mentorship, generosity, and unwavering support for students have created opportunities that will benefit the dental technology profession for generations.
